The aim of the course is to contribute in building DDR planning capacity, learn to understand the planning process and know the UN guiding principles on DDR planning and implementation. At the same time contributing to increased understanding on each role among involved actors and the importance of co-operation/co-ordination in the peace building process. Exchange of experience and different points of view in a mixed environment with participants from different military, police and civilian organisations is one of the key factors of success.

A 2-week course, delivered in conjunction with staff of the PPC. Utilizing the IDDRS topics the KAIPTC DDR course has been specifically adapted for the West African sub-region. The aim of the course is to enhance regional peacekeeping capacity by providing those attending the course with a thorough understanding of the principles and procedures involved in the planning, co-ordination and conduct of DDR. DDR is examined from the civilian, military and police perspectives.

Specialisation Course in  DDR Civilian Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Course (CPPC)

Applications for the civilian peacekeeping and peacebuilding course 2007 are now closed. Participants have already been selected for the programme. Applications will reopen later this year for 2008.

The DDR training will be an advanced-level specialised course aimed primarily to benefit civilians, especially African civilian personnel, that are already engaged in DDR-related activities with basic to medium-level experience. The training aims to enhance the participants' existing skills by learning from resource persons who already have extensive knowledge in the field.

The course curriculum will cover a range of challenges in present-day peacebuilding in Africa, including the security sector reform, DDR planning, the role of public information in DDR and a range of practical elements, such as DDR camp site management and the handling of small and light weapons.

The Challenges of DDR Today and Tomorrow
An International Training Course for Practitioners on the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration of Combatants after Armed Conflicts. The course is open to soldiers, administrators, police officers, development and relief workers and NGO representatives of all countries with field experience in post-conflict areas who want to specialize in the execution of DDR programmes. The 20 participants will be selected in such a way as to ensure a variety of nationalities, cultures and professional and regional expertise. They must also be fluent in English and eager to share their knowledge and concerns
